Which events should you start with?
Choose actions closest to the business goal: a submitted form, a phone call, a purchase, a booking or a request for a proposal. Clicking “Send” does not always mean the form arrived. It is better to measure a confirmed success, not merely an attempt. Clicking a phone number signals an intention to call, but it does not prove a conversation took place. Name those differences in the report. Other events, such as scrolling a page, can help diagnose behaviour but should not masquerade as sales.
What do GA4 and GTM do?
Google Tag Manager helps manage code and rules for sending events, while GA4 collects data about user behaviour. That is a simplification, but enough to plan the work. First I write down which event has business significance and when it occurs. Then I configure the tracking, test it on different devices and check that the same contact is not counted more than once. Implementation is complete when the data is usable, not when a green indicator lights up in a dashboard.
Why can numbers differ between systems?
An ad platform, GA4 and a company spreadsheet look at different stages and use different rules for attributing a contact to a channel. Some people block tracking or do not consent to analytics. Someone may also see an ad, return later through search and call. Do not expect every number to match perfectly. Check whether differences make sense, whether events disappeared after a site change and whether conclusions rest on a single metric. If you use advertising and analytics tools, consent setup must be part of the implementation.
How do you connect tracking to sales?
Record the source, topic, enquiry quality and later outcome for each contact. For service businesses, simple statuses such as “new”, “proposal”, “won” and “lost” often give more value than another elaborate dashboard. This lets you assess whether a channel brings the right customers, rather than merely cheap forms. As the process matures, information can be sent from a CRM back to ad systems, but first make sure the data is reliable and privacy rules are followed.
How often should you check tracking?
Test it after implementation and after changes to the form, website, booking system or consent settings. Once a month, carry out a simple check: send a test enquiry, verify the event and compare contact counts with email and the spreadsheet. If the discrepancy grows, investigate before increasing the budget. Good analytics need not be complicated. It should be reliable enough to help you make the next decision.
